Lexington's New "A" Player

The Lexington Summer Tournament has been rated. Congratulations to Matthew Gurley for crossing into the A class rating category for the first time. You can see part of his game verses Billy Woodward and the cross tables in the previous post on 7/24.

Pictures From the Louisville Chess Club

The Louisville Chess Club meets every Tuesday at La Bamba restaurant (1237 Bardstown Road, Louisville KY 40204) from 6 pm - whenever (usually 11pm or 12am). Here are three pictures from the most recent meeting. Especially noteworthy was the attendance of Hank Rothgerber, right, a past state champion who came out of hiding and played a few games with the ever crafty Mike Thomas.

Lexington Summer

On Saturday July 24, Don Lutz hosted the Lexington summer chess tournament. The site proved to be a fine chess venue and Don's wife and mom provided a wonderful lunch. The top heavy field was lead by Whaley, Rothgerber, Baker, and Bush. Many fine chess bouts were fought, the event is rated and crosstables are up!

This position is from Gurley - Woodward in round 1. A few moves later Billy Woodward forks Mathew Gurley's king and rook with his knight only to call it an illegal move on himself some moves later. Apparently, this knight move put Billy's own king en prise. Billy, being a gentleman, didn't want the game to end in this fashion.

Some say he has moved. Some say he is hiding from the KGB, or maybe he is lurking on the ICC under an assumed name? Rumor has it that Grandmasters are receiving a drumming from a player with a positional sense too high to be a computer. Could it be him? The real question is what is he waiting for?
